IRS Tax Transcripts

If you owe taxes to Uncle Sam, it is always helpful to have a copy of the official IRS Transcript showing what the IRS thinks you owe and why.  You can obtain that transcript online at www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript.  You will want a transcript for each year in which you owe taxes.

To register and use this service, you need:

  • your SSN, date of birth, filing status and mailing address from latest tax return,
  • access to your email account,
  • your personal account number from a credit card, mortgage, home equity loan, home equity line of credit or car loan, and
  • a mobile phone with your name on the account.

You will probably want the Tax Account Transcript – shows basic data such as return type, marital status, adjusted gross income, taxable income and all payment types. It also shows changes made after you filed your original return. This transcript is available for the current tax year and up to 10 prior years using Get Transcript Online or Form 4506-T.
